‘They insist’: Manly tipped to make shock call on coach as ‘extenuating circumstances’ laid bare

Manly coach Anthony Seibold is being tipped to keep his job beyond this season despite what has been a disappointing 2025 Sea Eagles campaign.

The Sea Eagles lost their fourth straight game over the weekend, effectively eliminating them from finals contention. Given they were in the mix for a top four spot a month ago, it’s been a stunning free fall.

During their four-game losing streak, the Sea Eagles lost by an average margin of 21 points and scored only six tries.

On Monday night’s episode of NRL360, veteran journalist Phil Rothfield explained which coaches around the league he believed were most under pressure.

A graphic showed Titans coach Des Hasler at a 10 as it’s expected he’ll be fired at season’s end while Knights mentor Adam O’Brien (9) and Cowboys coach Todd Payten (8.5) were next on Rothfield’s pressure gauge.

Rothfield then had Seibold at just a three, with the journalist explaining why the Manly coach’s number wasn’t higher.

“I’ll tell you why I’ve got him at three is because I made a lot of calls today to powerbrokers there and they insist (he’ll keep his job in 2026),” Rothfield said.

“In my opinion, he should be at a seven, but I’m trying to inform the people and based on the calls I made today, Seibold will line up as coach for Manly in 2026.

“I think he should be under more pressure.”

Given the talent on the Sea Eagles’ roster and the fact they won a finals game last year, the majority of Manly fans believe that missing the eight simply isn’t good enough.

While there have been calls to sack Seibold, club CEO Tony Mestrov has publicly backed him several times this season.

NRL360 co-host Gorden Tallis asked Rothfield how long into 2026 until Seibold will be on the hot seat again.

“I would suggest that unless they are going all right in the first eight to ten weeks next year, the pressure will build,” Rothfield said.

“We thought that if they didn’t make finals, he was going to be gone this year,” Tallis responded.

It’s been a tough season for the Sea Eagles in more ways than one.

Their forward pack has been decimated by injuries and the impending departure of Daly Cherry-Evans has been looming over this club all season like a black cloud.

According to News Corp journalist Brent Read, those “extenuating circumstances” give cause for Seibold to be given some grace.

“No one saw Jake Trbojevic struggling like he has this year and suffering the headknocks,” Read said.

“No one saw Tommy struggling a little bit and no one saw what was going to happen with Daly

“They lost Taniela Paseka in Round 3, Josh Aloiai’s season’s been over, Haumole Olakau’atu’s been injured as well. They got destroyed through the middle on the weekend. They have no middles.

“There’s been some circumstances that has made life difficult for Manly.

“The club is doing the right thing and I’m happy they’re keeping Anthony there.”
