The Gold Coast Titans are reportedly considering a shock backflip that could mean veteran coach Des Hasler remaining at the helm of the NRL club.
The Titans are fighting it out to avoid the wooden spoon in Hasler’s second season in charge, and reports had been rife the club would move on from the 64-year-old who may retire from coaching.

However a surprise win over the Warriors a fortnight again, then a heart-breaking near-miss against the Panthers last week, may have prompted a rethink according to News Corp rugby league reporter Brent Read.
“There are whispers around that maybe Des is going to survive now. On the weekend they played a bit better, they were still beaten obviously,” he said on Triple M.
“There are some suggestions that Des may get a stay of execution.
“I still think Des’ time is up, I think he’s done. But what I am saying is now there are some whispers that the club may have a different opinion.”
Meanwhile, The Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield said he was informed “the tough decision” would be made at the season’s end.
“Whether that has changed on the back of a win in New Zealand, and a great performance against Penrith, I don’t know,” Rothfield said.
The Titans reportedly included a clause in Hasler’s contract that would allow them to sack him should they miss out of the finals in 2025.

His contract runs until the end of the 2026 season, but should they sever ties, the Gold Coast would not have to pay him out of the final year of his deal.
Meanwhile, Read also revealed that Beau Fermor is “desperate” to remain with the club, despite claims he was being shopped around by the Titans.
“He has been shopped around as I understand it, but I’m not sure it was done with the green light from Beau Fermor,” Read said.
“My understand is Beau would like to stay and has no real desire to leave… he can’t negotiate at the moment, but he can certainly get expressions of interest out of clubs.
Fermor featured for Queensland this season under Billy Slater but was dropped after the series opener, despite being one of the Titans’ most consistent performers this season.
